Garden City, N.Y. - Avenging a season-ending loss last season, the Adelphi University men's basketball team picked up a 98-89 conference victory over Southern New Hampshire Tuesday evening, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The Panthers (7-14, 3-10 NE10) saw five players reach double-figures with
Jack Laffey finishing at the front with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Michael Coffey,
Nick Cambio and
Conor McGuinness rounded out the starters who notched double-digit points, helping the team to 50 percent shooting from the field.
Tavon Ginyard came off the bench for the Brown and Gold to contribute 11 points, using three 3-pointers in the win.
The Penmen (11-7, 7-6 NE10) lost their fifth straight, despite three players scoring 20 or more points. The teams were even to start the first half, until a layup from Ginyard sparked a 12-point spurt from the hosts gave them an immediate advantage. SNHU managed to work their deficit down to single digits, but with under six minutes to play in the opener, Adelphi once more pushed ahead with the help of knocked down shots courtesy of Laffey and McGuinness.
Coming out of the break the Penmen were able to dip back under the double-figure threshold but a 12-2 run had the home team out ahead by nearly 20. With less than four minutes in regulation, SNHU found themselves within reach of the leading Panthers, but foul trouble down the stretch sent Adelphi to the line 16 times, where they picked up 14 points at the charity stripe. At the buzzer, the visitor's leading scorer Chris Walters drained a three-pointer but the deficit was too great to overcome, despite the grad student finishing with 28.
The Panthers remain in their home gym to play their next game against Stonehill on Saturday, January 27. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The game will kick off a double-header on Employee Appreciation Day, in which all university staff will receive four complementary tickets to each game. These tickets can be picked up in the athletic department office.
