Garden City, N.Y. - Junior
Jack Laffey scored his 1,000th career point in the second half of Adelphi University men's basketball's win over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon, helping the Panthers to a 106-74 Northeast-10 Conference victory.
Finishing with a game-high 28 points, Laffey put in his second layup of the second half to join 35 other players in the men's basketball 1000-point club. Also landing in double-digits was
Michael Coffey who had 11, as
Tavon Ginyard and
Doug Chappell came off the bench to account for 21 and 13, respectively. Nearly missing a double-double in the victory was
Nick Cambio, who pulled down 13 boards, scoring eight.
The Panthers (6-12, 2-8 NE10) slowly rolled to a double-digit lead after the opening eight minutes of action. A jumper from Ginyard sparked a 17-point haul peppered with threes from Laffey and Chappell and capped with a trey courtesy of Coffey to push out to a 21-point advantage.
The Purple Knights (5-11, 2-9 NE10) were kept quiet from the hot shooting from the home team, as Adelphi was able to maintain the upper hand, leading by at most 25 before the opener was through.
Coffey started off the second frame with a three of his own to keep the Brown and Gold rolling all the way to Laffey's 23rd point of the contest at 16:28 that pushed him over the threshold of 1,000 career points. A 13-6 run kept Saint Mike's trailing middway through the second half of action as back to back dunks from
Austin Beech helped the Panthers push out to a 31-point advantage. Eight points straight from Ginyard continued to widen the gap as the program finished with 16 made shots from downtown in the contest.
The deficit was too great for the Knights to overcome down the stretch, as Adelphi continued to shoot, reaching the century mark for the fourth time this season, this time courtesy of a three-pointer from Chapell. For the game, the hosts were perfect at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes, finishing at 77 percent. From the field, the team also shot over 50 percent, going 38-70. The home team was largely helped by 44 bench points, compared to the Knights 31 that came from contributors off the bench.
The Adelphi men's team is back on the road next week when they travel to take on the Falcons of Bentley University on Wednesday, January 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
