Overtime Upset Leaves Men's Basketball in Defeat at Bentley, 83-81

Waltham, Mass. - Coming down to the final seconds of overtime, the Adelphi University men's basketball team fell in its second overtime decision in the past three games. faltering against the Bentley University Falcons in an 83-81 final decision.

Off the bench, Tavon Ginyard led the Brown and Gold with 20 points, as teammate Terrel Martin-Garcia also reached double-figures with 18 points, compliments of 50 percent three-point shooting, and added 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Overall, Adelphi posted a field-goal percentage of 45.3 and out-rebounded the home team, 40-34, but nonetheless, Bentley's depth proved a strong suit, as the Falcons saw four starters score 15 points or better in the game. 

Following the first few minutes after tip-off, each team traded hoops with Bentley ahead of the Panthers (6-13, 2-9 NE10), until Martin-Garcia hit a three to put the visitors up, 14-12. The advantage on the hosts was short-lived when the Falcons (10-7, 7-5 NE10) went on a 14-8 run with five minutes left in the half. The Brown and Gold only trailed by one at the end of the first, after Michael Coffey went to the line, knocking down one of three free throws.

Nick Cambio (10) and Ginyard (9) led the Panthers in points after the opening 20 minutes.

To start the second half, the Falcons came out on fire, going on a 10-2 run over Adelphi to gain a nine-point lead. Martin-Garcia and Jack Laffey traded three-pointers with Bentley to cut the host lead to three with under 12 minutes to play in regulation.

A pair of free throws by Ginyard and a Coffey layup at the 8:23 mark put the Panthers in the lead, 62-61. The upper hand stayed with Adelphi until Ryan Richmond of Bentley tied the game at 73 with just over a minute still remaining. With 20 seconds left on the clock, the Panthers were not able to net the gamewinner, forcing an overtime period at the Dana Center in Waltham, Massachusetts. 

A quick three by the hosts, put Bentley in the lead ultimately leaving the Falcons with the victory. With less than five seconds on the clock, Zach Gilpin sealed the deal for the home team, nailing a triple which left less than a second for Adelphi. 

The Brown and Gold will continue its road trip on Saturday, January 20 with a contest at Franklin Pierce University commencing at 3:30 p.m.
