Garden City, N.Y. - A career-high four goals by transfer
Andre De Giorgi, and a five-goal second half, powered the second-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Long Island rival Molloy College on Wednesday night at Motamed Field.
The Panthers (2-0-1), who rose to No. 2 in the nation in the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches' Association's Division II poll on Wednesday morning, out-shot the visiting Lions (1-2) by a 23-6 margin (19-4 on goal), but found themselves training 1-0 after the first 45 minutes of play. Dan Massey scored the first goal of the contest for Molloy just 3:58 into the game, as a one-touch effort across the box beat
Joseph Blasetti to his lower left to open the scoring.
It took over 46 minutes of scoreless soccer for Adelphi to net the equalizer, as De Giorgi scored his first of the night in the 50th minute, a rebound off of a missed header set up by
Alessandro Sambone and
Alex Varkatzas, which tied the game at 1-1. It took less than six minutes after his first tally for De Giorgi to net his second, which gave Adelphi its first lead as he buried a cross from
Joseph Sanchez.
In the high-scoring affair, Massey tallied his second of the night off a corner in the 66th minute to knot the game at 2-2, but following a lightning delay, the Panthers found a spark and poured on the offense, scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes.
De Giorgi's header into the back right of the net off the crossbar gave them the lead for good, before he ended the scoring with just 1:49 left in the contest.
De Giorgi and Varkatzas combined for five goals and two assists on the night for a total of 12 points, while Sanchez tallied three helpers. Blasetti allowed the two goals with one save in the full 90 minutes to pick up his first win of the season.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 12 when they open Northeast-10 Conference play at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. at 4 p.m.
