Easton, Mass. -- Down by a goal in the 80th minute, the third-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team staged a furious comeback in its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Tuesday night at Stonehill, scoring two goals in waning time for the 3-2 victory.
John Stojcevski scored on a free kick from the top of the 18 for Adelphi (3-0-1, 1-0 NE10) to tie the game at 2-2, before reigning NE10 Player of the Week
Andre De Giorgi continued his late-game heroics with the game-winner with just 2:18 on the clock in regulation. De Giorgi had scored the game-winner in each of the Panthers' three wins this year thus far.
Adelphi trailed 2-0 in the contest after the first 12:45 as Stonehill's (3-2, 0-1 NE10) Connor O'Brien scored a pair against
Matt Apicella in the contest. However, that would be all that the sophomore allowed in the game, as he recorded five saves en route to earning his second win of the year.
The Brown and Gold got on the board in the 17th minute, as
Toni Soler scored his first goal of the season, breaking the shutout effort of Conor McDonough, who made six saves of his own in the contest.
Adelphi ramped up its offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the hosts by an 11-3 margin to end the game with a 17-8 margin total, while also taking 11 corner kicks. Four yellow cards were issued, two to both teams, in a physical contest, which saw 28 called fouls.
The Panthers had the opportunity to tie the game in the 62nd minute, as
Guillermo Lazcano was awarded a penalty kick only to be turned aside by McDonough, and set the stage for their rally later in the half.
Adelphi is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 16, hosting the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in a 1 p.m. NE10 contest.
