Kutztown, Pa. - Despite having an overall advantage in corners, the Adelphi University field hockey team was unable to convert any of its opportunities into goals, falling to Kutztown University in a Monday afternoon matinee, 3-0.
The shutout match was the second road game in a row for Adelphi (0-2), which hasn't scored a goal in its first two games of the season.
The first goal for the Bears (2-0) came in the 13th minute of the contest off the stick of sophomore Kyra Wozniak off a rebound in front of the cage, assisted by Mackenzie Fuhrman. Just three minutes later, Kutztown's Fuhrman netted the second goal of the game off a pass across the circle from Leigh Roselli. At the end of the first half, the Bears held the advantage over the Panthers with two goals, four corners and five shots.
The Brown and Gold were able to hold off the hosts for 20 minutes of scoreless play to start the second, but in the 56th minute, Madison Stewart scored her third goal of the season off a deflection and second assist of the day by Fuhrman.
In the second half, the Panthers had five shots on goal, compared to the Bears' four. Although having a total of six corners, Adelphi was not able to finish any of its five shots. Amanda Gargiulo saved six of Kutztown's nine shots on goal (11 total) to hold the Bears to three goals for the contest.
A quick turnaround for Adelphi has the Panthers set to play tomorrow, Sept. 5, to face off with the Huskies ib the campus Bloomsburg University. The final non-conference matchup for the squad will begin at 4 p.m.
