Bloomsburg, Pa. - With only 24 hours to prepare, the #10 Adelphi University field hockey team's quick turnaround got the best of them as they fell to #8 Bloomsburg University Tuesday afternoon to wrap-up their non-conference schedule.
The two NFHCA top 10 teams fought for 70 minutes, but in the end, the Huskies (3-0) prevailed, 5-1.
At the end of the first half, the hosts out-shot Adelphi 12-3, with nine registered on goal. Senior goalie Amanda Gargiulo defended her cage well totaling eight saves in the first frame -- only allowing one goal in that time for the Huskies, scored by Brooke Zeiders with the assist from Willow Perkins.
Despite a competitive first half, Bloomsburg came out hungry in the second, scoring two goals within two minutes, to extend their lead to three. Adelphi held off Bloomsburg's pressure for another 15 minutes until Perkins shot through a crowd of defenders from the top of the arc to net the fourth goal of the game. The final goal for the Huskies was scored by Erica Krebs off a long pass from the stick of Zeider. With just 30-seconds left in the contest, Adelphi's Danielle Kempf took advantage of their final corner of the day, scoring the Panthers' only goal in the contest and first of the season.
The Huskies held an edge over Adelphi in almost every category, except in saves where Gargiulo posted a career-high of 14. She surpassed her previous high of 12 saves versus Merrimack on Nov. 1, 2016.
The Panthers will get a much needed three days off before returning to play on Saturday to face off with Bentley University and open Northeast-10 Conference play. The team heads to Waltham, Massachusetts for the noon contest.
