Garden City, N.Y. - Three different Adelphi University players recorded double-digit kills Saturday afternoon, helping the Panthers (7-7, 3-0 NE10) defeat Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Leading the charge was
McKenna Clawson, who posted a team-high 16 kills and added 10 digs on defense.
Victoria Cast and
Cara McKenzie put up big blocks at the net and were responsible for 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Katie Barry missed her career-best assist number by just two, finishing with 46 in the win. In all, the team held a 12-4 advantage in service aces with Clawson and
Katarina Warburton both accounting for four.
The home team took the first set to get settled, losing the opener 25-22. The Greyhounds (3-10, 1-3 NE10) committed a 12-2 run through the middle of the set to hold on to a 14-6 lead. Despite a five-point run with
Leilani Vazquez at the serving line, Assumption was able to pull away to secure the win.
Tables turned and the Panthers held a 7-2 lead early in the second set. The visitors rattled off five unanswered points to even the set at seven-all but kills from McKenzie and several attack errors from the Assumption offense allowed the hosts to lead 15-9. Adelphi scored eight of the final 10 points to even the overall score in the match. The third set held close in the early going, but a block from Cast and McKenzie sparked a 10-4 run that put the home team in the drivers seat. Cast closed the door with back to back kills to push the Panthers ahead 2-1 in the game.
The ultimately final set was tight but three consecutive errors from Assumption coupled with an ace from Clawson and kill from
Madison Canestrari pushed Adelphi ahead- a lead they ran away with to earn their third NE10 victory of the season.
The team is back in action on Tuesday, October 3 when they trek across town for a regional battle with LIU Post at 7:00 p.m.
