Brookville, N. Y. - Despite a 10-kill performance from
Cara McKenzie, the Adelphi University volleyball program suffered a four-set loss to LIU Post Tuesday evening.
McKenzie was the lone member of the Panthers (7-8) to reach double-figure kills as
McKenna Clawson nearly missed a double-double posting nine kills and 10 digs. Additionally on defense
Katarina Warburton and Leilani Vazquez led the way with 14 digs apiece as
Megan Manierski and setter of the week
Katie Barry split duties posting 17 and 16 assists, respectively.
The first set was an all-out battle ending in a victory for the visiting Brown and Gold, 31-29. The teams went back and forth in the opening points, until the Pioneers (15-3) hopped out to a 15-12 lead with the help of back-to-back service aces. Adelphi stormed back with kills from Cast and Vazquez to lock the set at 15-all.
Madison Canestrari kept the first set from ending with her kill at 25-24 and McKenzie shut the door with two straight points for the finish.
Adelphi maintained a lead through the second set until several errors and a kill from Danielle Valenza put the hosts back in the drivers seat. Unfortunately the Pioneers ran with the lead they captured, scoring six of the final eight points to even the match at one apiece. With momentum in their favor, LIU Post pushed out to an 8-2 advantage in the third but the Panthers took a timeout and came back with the next four points. The home team was able to secure the win and push ahead in the non-conference matchup, holding Adelphi to 14 points.
The final set started out close, much like the first and second, but an 11-point run from the Green and Gold allowed them to push ahead to an equal advantage. An 8-2 run was not enough for the Panthers late in the fourth as two more points for the hosts completed the set and ended the match.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, October 9 when they travel to defending East Region Champions American International College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
