Late PK Leads #3 Men's Soccer to Victory Over #12 SNHU in Top 20 Clash

Garden City, N.Y. - With 84 minutes of scoreless soccer in the books for two of the best teams in Division II, Federico De Oliveira was awarded a late penalty kick that proved the difference in a 1-0 victory for the Adelphi University men's soccer team over the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Saturday afternoon on Motamed Field.

The third-ranked Panthers (8-0-1, 5-0 NE10) remain perfect in Northeast-10 Conference play on the season with the victory, while the 12th-ranked Penmen (6-2-1, 3-2-1 NE10) suffered their second straight defeat to a conference opponent this season.

A physical contest from the first whistle saw a combined 26 fouls and three yellow cards, and Adelphi proved unable to break through a staunch SNHU defense despite several opportunities prior to the deciding penalty kick.

An 8-0 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, and a 17-4 edge in the game largely came up empty, as Daniel Milton turned aside nine Adelphi efforts in the Penmen net.

Raymond Leto made both his saves in the contest in the first 10 minutes of the second half, including a lunging effort on a ball which came off the foot of Chaney Nash-Gibney to keep the game scoreless, but it was not until the 84:37 mark that the contest would be decided.

Consecutive corners for the Penmen in the 71st minute produced no clean shots on goal, as the visitors took five of their six total in the second half.

After a scrum in the box saw Andre De Giorgi taken down in front of the net in the 85th minute, last season's NE10 Player of the Year De Oliveira faked to his left, only to beat Milton to his lower right-hand corner on the PK attempt and finally give Adelphi the lead.

The Penmen were unable to generate a game-tying attempt in the final five minutes of the contest, as Adelphi came away with the hard-fought victory.

Adelphi does not return home for a fortnight, as the Panthers play their next two contests away from Motamed Field. Next up for the Brown and Gold is an NE10 tilt at Assumption on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
