Worcester, Mass. -
Andre De Giorgi broke a 1-1 tie with his 11th goal of the season, while
Toni Soler chipped in a goal and an assist for the second-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team on Thursday night, as the Panthers upended Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action, 4-1.
Two goals in the first 13 minutes saw the game tied, a place Adelphi has rarely been this season, but De Giorgi broke the deadlock just under five minutes later to give the Brown and Gold a lead it would never relinquish en route it to its ninth straight win. Soler had the first goal of the game and a second-half assist for Adelphi (9-0-1, 7-0 NE10) for a team-high three points in the victory, as Guillermo Lozcano and
James Thristino were responsible for Adelphi's other tallies.Â
Soler got the Panthers on the board one tick under the five-minute mark into the game, taking a free kick into the far bar from 30 yards out to give the second-ranked team in the country a 1-0 lead over the Greyhounds (4-7-0, 2-5-0). However, Assumption quickly responded against
Raymond Leto in the Adelphi net, as Kevin Hernandez took a cross from Simon Trcka in front of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 13th minute.
Adelphi added space behind the feet of Thristino and Lozcano, as the former took a
Matt Giaconelli cross into the goal in the 35th minute, and the latter iced the game in the 80th for the lone goal of the second half.
Adelphi, which takes the most shots in the nation, held a 23-7 advantage in Thursday's contest, as Leto's counterpart Brian Murray made seven total saves. The Panthers also held an 8-3 edge in corners, and both teams saw the whistle blown against them 11 times.Â
The Panthers are back in action after nearly a week off next Wednesday, Oct. 11 with a 7:30 p.m. contest at SCSU.
