Easton, Mass. - Despite a three-hour lightening delay and a 5-1 deficit, the Adelphi University field hockey team never quit on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Stonehill College. The Brown and Gold fought back scoring three goals in the second half, however, the Skyhawks of Stonehill held on for the victory over the Panthers, 5-3.
The first half ended with Stonehill College (7-3, 4-0 NE10) up two goals over the Brown and Gold. The first came during the 12th minute from the stick of Kacie Smith, off a pass from the top of the arc from Michaela Antonellis, the first of four Smith tallied on the day.
The goal marked Smith's 22nd on the season. The Panthers held the home teamm off for another 26 minutes until Smith scored her 23rd goal on the season and second of the game, putting the Skyhawks up 2-0 to end the half.
The second half commenced with Stonehill scoring its third goal three minutes into the period, credited to Smith once again from a short pass to the center from Carly Andersen. Despite a 3-0 deficit, Adelphi broke up the shutout two minutes later to get on the scoreboard as
Elissa Frein tipped the ball into the cage off a pass from the right side by
Danielle Kempf.
Seconds later, Stonehill responded courtesy of Samantha Day, and Smith added another in the 49th minute off her own rebound to make it a 5-1 game.
After a timeout called by the Panthers, they quickly gained back momentum with a goal by Elizabeth Mercuri off her own rebound, cutting the Stonehill lead 5-2. Seven minutes later, Mercuri fired again, netting her second of the game off a pass from Frein.
Despite cutting Stonehill's lead to two goals, the Brown and Gold could not pull any closer to claim the victory on Saturday afternoon.
Amanda Gargiulo ended the day with eight saves against 21 shots, as the Skyhawks out-shot Adelphi 21-12 after 70 minutes of play.
The Panthers look ahead to their next match-up with the University of New Haven under the lights on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
