Field Hockey Sets Modern Program Record for Goals Scored in 10-0 Victory at New Haven

West Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University field hockey team completed its string of road games at the University of New Haven on Wednesday night in emphatic fashion.

Scoring eight goals in the first half gave the Panthers a massive advantage to claim the victory over the Chargers, 10-0. Both the 10-goal margin of victory and 10 goals scored are the largest for Adelphi in its modern recorded program history since the team returned to campus in 2008.

Adelphi (3-7) came out of the gate on fire, netting the first goal of the contest before the two-minute mark of the first half. Emily Power put the ball in the cage off an assist from Samantha Nizich, for her first of three goals on the evening.

Just under five minutes later, Power net her second of the game after beating the keeper out high to put the Panthers up 2-0. The assist was credited to Jackie Brown on Power's second goal.

The third goal of the half came from the freshmen tandem of Danielle Kempf and Brown, who added another assist to her stat line, before Power completed her hat-trick scoring her third of the night and putting the Panthers up 4-0 just over a minute later.

To close out the scoring in the opening 35 minutes, Kempf lined up two more goals for Adelphi just before the 22-minute mark, for her first collegiate hat-trick and second for Adelphi in the game. Goals seven and eight were credited to senior Justine DeLuca off the bench, from passes from Nizich and Brown with 10 minutes remaining in the first.

With the second half underway, Adelphi did not let up their advantage holding New Haven (0-8) scoreless for the entire half. Though the Chargers did their best to hold off the Adelphi offense, Brown netted her second goal of the game, putting the Panthers up 9-0 with 10 minutes left in regulation. To conclude the shutout, Elissa Frein increased the Adelphi score to 10 with the assist from Libby Mercuri in the 69th minute.

The Panthers showed an impressive effort out-shooting the Chargers 30-2, 23 being on goal. Amanda Gargiulo contributed one save and was able to hold New Haven scoreless for 70 minutes.

The Brown and Gold return to Motamed Field on Saturday against Franklin Pierce. The Northeast-10 matchup is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
