Field Hockey Nets First NE10 Win Over SNHU, 1-0

Garden City, N.Y.- A lone goal in the first half by Emily Power gave the Adelphi University field hockey team an edge to come out with its first Northeast-10 conference victory of the 2017 season over Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.

The first half of regulation ended with Adelphi (2-5, 1-2 NE10) up one after a goal off the stick of Power in the sixth minute to put them up 1-0.

The assist was credited to Jackie Brown, who passed a perfect ball from the top of the circle for a deflection off Power's stick. Amanda Gargiulo finished the first half with three saves compared to Melanie Rennie's one.

The second half commenced going scoreless for both teams for the duration of the match. Adelphi out-shot the Penmen (5-2, 2-1 NE10) 20-11 in 70 minutes, as Rennie totaled 11 saves on the day.

The most decisive moment of the second came with two minutes left in regulation, where Gargiulo made an impressive three saves in a row in front of the cage as SNHU attempted to tie, finishing the contest with six saves. Although Southern New Hampshire held the edge in penalty corners (9-8), the Brown and Gold did not let up on defense to hold the Penmen scoreless for the entire match.

Adelphi is back on the road for another NE10 face-off with an undefeated Pace University on Tuesday, Sept. 26. The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y.
