Manchester, N.H. -- The third-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team ran its shutout streak to three games on Saturday afternoon, hitting the road for the first time in a week and a half to defeat the Saint Anselm College Hawks, 3-0.
Andre De Giorgi scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 10th minute to give Adelphi a lead it would never relinquish, and tallies by
James Thristino and
Alex Varkatzas less than a minute apart in the second half accounted for all the scoring.
De Giorgi currently ranks second in Division II in goals, and the senior transfer out of Lisbon broke a deadlock early on in the first half, as one of Adelphi's 11 first-half team shots found its way past Hawks keeper Helio Meirelles Neto. Neto also made six saves to help his team's cause in the half, keeping the home team down by one after the first 45 minutes.
Adelphi broke through quickly to begin the second half, with Thristino finishing with his left foot in the 50th minute off a
Stephen Megaloudis through ball, before Varkatzas tacked on the last tally after
Matt Giaconelli pulled the ball back to him off the right end line.
Goalkeeper Ray Leto returned to the lineup for Adelphi after missing the past six games with a hand injury, playing all nearly 75 minutes and making one first half save. He split duties with
Brian Morgan, who found his way into the cage for the second time in Adelphi's past three contests to close the game out.
The Panthers are back on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they travel to Bentley University for a 3:30 pm NE10 contest.
