Garden City, N.Y. - After spending majority of September on the road, the Adelphi University volleyball team finally opened up on their home court, taking on Le Moyne College Friday afternoon.
Despite falling to the Dolphins (6-6, 0-2 NE10) in the first set, the Panthers (5-7, 2-0 NE10) stormed back to win the next three sets to take the victory.
The offense was led by
Victoria Cast, who posted a game-high 13 kills while adding three block assists along the way. The home team held a 14 to seven advantage in blocks and had the upper hand in digs, led by libero
Katarina Warburton who accounted for 23.
Cara McKenzie and
Madison Canestrari each contributed seven block assists, and both were responsible for six kills each.
Adelphi dropped the opening set, after posting a less than .100 hitting percentage plagued with 11 errors as a team. The hosts kept it close, trading points with Le Moyne and even holding a lead at 19-18, but the visitors took seven of the closing eight points to secure the win.
The second frame started out much of the same way, however the teams were locked at 18-18 after a Green and White timeout. Cast and a double block from Vazquez and McKenzie helped the Panthers sneak away with a 25-23 win to even the match.
Four consecutive blocks midway through the third set (all including Canestrari) helped the Brown and Gold jump out to a 12-7 lead. The hosts maintained that lead in pursuit of a 25-17 victory to lead 2-1 in the match. Several errors and a
McKenna Clawson service ace once again helped Adelphi pull away in the fourth and ultimately final set.
The Dolphins did not go down without a fight, but a kill from
Sophia Powless and two errors from Le Moyne sparked a three-point run to allow the Panthers to lead 18-15. Five of the final seven points were awarded to the home team who improved to 2-0 in conference play with the win.
The team is back in action on Monday, Sept. 25 when they host Dominican College in non-conference action at 7:00 p.m.
