Weiser Nets Game-Winner in OT to Finish 3-2 Victory at Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. - In the 96th minute of a tie game, Kerianne Scorce connected with Alexsis Weiser on Wednesday evening to help Adelphi women's soccer defeat the University of Bridgeport in non-conference action.

The Long Beach, Calif. freshman tallied her second game-winning goal of the season for Adelphi in the win, having also scored the final tally in a 2-1 win at Pace on Sept. 13.

In a rematch of the last two NCAA Division II East Region Championship games, the Panthers (6-0) held an advantage in shots and corners over the Purple Knights (2-4-1), despite trailing 2-1 as late as the 85th minute in the second half.

Adelphi, ranked #8 in the latest United Soccer Coaches' Association Division II national poll, was able to get on the board first in the opening frame, when a penalty kick was award to Jeanine Nunez, who buried the shot for her seventh goal of the season. Both teams traded shots from there, but the hosts were unable to generate any offense as they broke for the locker room trailing at the half.

In the 57th minute, Bridgeport netted the equalizer, courtesy of Eleonore Freby to stand at 1-1. The home team took the lead nearly 10 minutes later on a goal from Rebekka Skaasheim, who scored on a through ball from her keeper.

Trailing, the Brown and Gold did not produce another goal until the game reached below the ten minute mark left in regulation. A scramble in front of the goal led to a Scorce tally to even the match in the 85th minute, and four yellow cards and as many offside calls later, 90 minutes forced the teams to start overtime.

Nunez found herself in a one-on-one early in the first period of overtime, but junior netminder Jennifer Wendelius was able to save the shot to keep the Panthers at bay. It wasn't until midway through that the visitors had the chance to strike again when Scorce crossed from the left flank to a charging Weiser who took a shot high to net the game-winner.

Wendelius completed the loss with four saves as Adelphi's Isabel Sandstrom earned her sixth win overall, picking up three saves along the way.

The squad returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 23 when they host Saint Michael's College for a 1:00 p.m. contest on their home turf, Motamed Field.
