Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker To #4 LIU Post

Brookville, N.Y.- In a hard fought battle and despite coming back from a 2-0 deficit, the Adelphi University field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker in the final minute across Long Island against the Pioneers of LIU Post on Wednesday night.

LIU Post (5-0, 2-0 NE10) dominated the first half scoring their first goal just before the six minute mark off the stick of Emily Miller. The ball was passed from the far right from Alyssa Lopresti and redirected into the lower left corner.

A little over 10 minutes later, Lopresti netted one for herself to advance their lead, 2-0. After two green cards delivered to the Pioneers in the 29th minute, the first half came to a close.

The Panthers (1-5, 0-2 NE10) came out of the gate in the second frame with momentum, scoring their first goal of the match less than four minutes in. The first goal for Adelphi was credited to Emily Power with the assist from Danielle Powers. However, LIU responded quickly scoring just under two minutes later off the stick of Miller for her second goal of the game.

The Panthers did not let the Pionees keep their edge despite the 3-1 lead as Power netted another goal nine minutes and her second on the day to make it 3-2. Elizabeth Mercuri beat the defense on a breakaway in response to a defensive save, knotting the score 3-3.

With 20 minutes left in regulation, both teams went scoreless until the home team broke the silence in the 69th minute. With 30 seconds left in the match, LIU claimed the victory off a penalty stroke goal from Kaycee Zelkovsky making the final score, 4-3.

Amanda Gargiulo finished the game with three saves compared to Rachel Vellis's two. LIU held an edge in shots over the Panthers by double (13-6), seven being on goal.

The Brown and Gold will return to Motamed Field on Sept. 23 in a contest against Southern New Hampshire University. The Northeast-10 matchup starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
