Garden City, N.Y. - Goals by a graduate student and a transfer bookended the third shutout victory of the season for the third-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team on Wednesday night on Motamed Field, as the Panthers blanked the Chargers of the University of New Haven, 3-0.
Fifth-year
Alex Varkatzas opened the scoring for Adelphi (5-0-1, 3-0 NE10) in the 14th minute, before junior transfer
Stephen Megaloudis scored the first goal of his Adelphi career late in the second half, with an own goal coming in-between to wrap up another conference victory for the Brown and Gold.
A dominant night offensively saw the Panthers out-shot the Chargers, 23-2, including 13-0 in the second half. With his defense largely keeping the Chargers out of their attacking third,
Joseph Blasetti stopped the lone shot on goal for New Haven in 90 minutes.
Varkatzas' third tally of the season came off an assist from
Toni Soler as the lone goal of the first half, as the SUNY Binghamton grad finished into the net off of a corner kick. Adelphi was unable to add any more goals to its tally in the first half, though saw two golden chances go begging as Federico de Oliveira missed an open net wide after beating the keeper in the 38th minute, and
James Thristino's next effort hit the crossbar seconds later.
In the second half, Thirstino's attempt on net was headed past Charger keeper Stefano Lorusso on a misplay, resulting in the own goal in the 62nd minute to double the Brown and Gold lead, with Megaloudis' finishing effort coming off a double assist from Florent Giardin and
Matt Giaconelli in the 76th.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they hit the road for an 11 a.m. NE10 contest at Saint Anselm College.
