Garden City, N.Y. -- Two goals in the first six minutes by newcomers Andre De Giorgi and Alex Varkatzas helped lead the Adelphi University men's soccer team to its first win of the season on Saturday night against Dominican College, 2-0, on the final day of the Adelphi Alumni Invitational.
De Giorgi found the back of the net for the Panthers (1-0-1) just 3:02 into the contest off a pass from Federico De Oliviera, connecting on a clean shot through the middle of the box.
Varkatzas' first goal as a member of the Brown and Gold came 2:33 later, as he took a cross from James Thristino into the back of the net.
The two goals were two of Adelphi's 14 shots in the first half, where they out-shot the Chargers (0-2), 14-3, with a total shot margin of 21-3 in the game. Matt Apicella got his first win for the Panthers in net, making one first-half save on the Chargers' lone shot on goal. Adelphi held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks, but for Dominican, Joshua Stephens made seven stops in his 90 minutes.
The Panthers return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 6 when they welcome the Molloy Lions to campus for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
