Garden City, N.Y. -- Three first-half goals set the tone for the #16 Adelphi University women's soccer team in a Monday matinee on Motamed Field, as the Panthers defeated the Bentley University Falcons, 3-1.
Jeanine Nunez ran her scoring streak to five straight games to begin the season, tallying a goal and an assist for Adelphi (5-0, 4-0 NE10) in the contest, while
Taylor Sipos also scored a goal for the Brown and Gold in the victory.
Adelphi's scoring began with an own goal, however, as freshman
Alexsis Weiser's attempt at the cage bounded off a Bentley defender and past Deirdre Macrorie, who made four saves for Bentley (3-3, 1-3 NE10) in the first 13 minutes of the contest.
The Adelphi lead doubled just under three minutes later at the 15:07 mark, as Sipos took a pass from Nunez at the top of the box across and into the goal to make it a 2-0 game, and Nunez later wrangled a pass from
Nicole Forte in the 32nd minute to beat the keeper one-on-one with speed and make it 3-0.
Adelphi held a slim 14-13 edge in the contest, but proved more accurate in the vicinity of the goal, holding a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.
Isabel Sandstrom made four saves in the Adelphi net in the victory, but saw her shutout bid ended with just 38 seconds left after Megan Doubleday found an open net after a missed save attempt.
The Panthers hit the road for a Wednesday contest at the University of Bridgeport up next, a rematch of the last two NCAA East Regional finals. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. on Wednesday night in Bridgeport.
