Garden City, N.Y.- Two quick goals in the first four minutes of regulation gave Saint Anselm an edge over the Adelphi University field hockey team in what became a 3-0 victory on Saturday morning on Motamed Field.
Saint Anselm (4-0, 1-0 NE10), the No.5-ranked team in NCAA Division II in the last NFHCA coaches' poll, handed Adelphi (1-4, 0-1 NE10) defeat in its home opener to begin Northeast-10 conference play.
The Hawks came out of the gate with purpose, scoring two goals within one minute of each other before the five minute mark of the first half. The first of the two were netted by Saint Anselm's Erin Collins off a rebound and a pass from Hannah Friend. Moments later, Jackie Guillemette of the Hawks took advantage of an open cage to score the second goal for Saint Anselm off a penalty corner.
The Brown and Gold held the Hawks off for another 25 minutes before Mia Vecchione let one go from the top of the circle for Hannah Potter to tip it into the cage past Amanda Gargiulo.
The second half posed no goals for either team, leaving the score 3-0 to end the game.
Gargiulo put up eight saves for Adelphi against an aggressive Hawks offense, which was also turned aside by a defensive save by Samantha Nizich in the 45th minute. The visiting keeper, Julia Hand, had two saves on the day, as Saint Anselm held an advantage over the Panthers in shots 15-6 --12 of which were on goal.
The Adelphi field hockey team will get back on the road on Wednesday to Brookville, N.Y. in a matchup with LIU Post at 4 p.m.
