Champions! Long Ball Helps Softball Win First NE10 Title in Four Years

Providence, RI - After a come-from-behind win in the Northeast 10 Conference semifinals, the Adelphi University softball team waited one day to play in the championship game, at Brown University Saturday afternoon. The team took on Northeast Division Regular Season Champions Merrimack College and used three solo home runs to capture their first Conference title in four years with a 6-2 decision.

The Warriors (33-13) were the first to strike after one and a half scoreless frames passed. The acting home team loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and was able to plate one run after Nicole Nanof was hit by a pitch but solid defense around starter Lindsay Mapes allowed the Panthers (35-13-1) to escape the inning. After Merrimack retired the first two batters, Brenna Martini (2-3) quickly tied the contest with a stroke of the bat, launching a shot over left field. Nicole Camera (1-3) followed suit as the next up for Adelphi and sent a ball over the left center fence, to give the Brown and Gold a one-run advantage.

A leadoff triple for Tamarra Crowe (2-4) got things started for the Blue and Gold in the following inning, as Nanof belted a triple to even the score in the championship contest. An RBI-groundout for Steph Staiano gave the lead back to Adelphi in the fifth- a lead they extended on a sacrifice fly from Christina Rizzi coupled with an error in the field to make it a 5-2 game.

Mapes, recently named NE10 Pitcher of the Year, went the distance for the SW Division Champs, throwing all seven innings and scattering eight hits for two runs. With the help of her team, they were able to prohibit any Warriors from scoring from the fourth inning on as Nicoletta Cuccio (2-4) slammed the door with a round-tripper of her own in the sixth to seal the deal for Adelphi.

Brenna Martini, Nicole Camera and Krista King were all selected for the NE10 All-Tournament team, along with two players from the Merrimack squad.

The Brown and Gold will find out who is going to join them in the NCAA Division II East Regional at 10:00 am on Monday, May 8 when the NCAA selection show airs on NCAA.com.
