Garden City, N.Y. - Senior
Lindsay Mapes went the distance behind a season-high 10 strikeouts while
Brenna Martini hit her 16th home run of the season to help the Adelphi University softball team to a 5-3 win over Wilmington University in the opening game of the NCAA Division II East 1 Regional on Thursday.
Martini hit a line drive over the left field fence to open Adelphi's (36-13-1) scoring in the fourth inning, in which the Brown and Gold put up four runs.
Megan Lewis, who drove in another run in the fourth with an RBI double, and
Stephanie Staiano each went 2-3 in the game, while
Lauren Sandelier also delivered a pinch-hit RBI double in the inning.Â
Wilmington (34-20) made the contest a one-run game in the sixth, as they scratched out three runs against Mapes in the inning. After two leadoff singles, an error broke up the shutout to lead to the first Wildcat run, before a squeeze bunt and a sacrifice fly plated the next two. Nonetheless, Mapes stranded the tying run on first, and Adelphi plated a big insurance run in the bottom of the frame. After Staiano singled to lead off, pinch-runner
Kristin Fealy was sacrificed to second and came around to score on a base hit by pinch-hitter
Christina Rizzi.
With the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning, Mapes doubled down for some of her sharpest pitching of the afternoon, retiring Becca Stanley on a strikeout looking and getting Rosa'Lynn Burton to strike out swinging on three pitches to end the game.
