Late-Inning Heroics Lift Softball Over Le Moyne, 10-9

Lowell, Mass. - The Adelphi University softball team kept their playoff run alive with 10 hits in the last two innings of Thursday's Northeast 10 semifinal matchup to overcome a seven-run deficit and capture a 10-9 victory against Le Moyne.

The Panthers (34-13-1) were helped offensively by four different players, each of which recorded two or more hits in the win. Krista King and Nicole Camera both went 3-for-4 at the dish, each scoring once and the latter accounting for four RBI. Nicoletta Cuccio and Christina Rizzi both chipped in two hits apiece and combined for five runs scored. Lindsay Mapes went 3.1 in the start and was later relieved by Kristin Fealy, who despite giving up two runs battled through to earn her ninth win of the season.

Le Moyne (29-17) came out hot in the top of the first, coming off a 13-5 win over Saint Anselm in the quarterfinals earlier in the day. The Dolphins plated two runs on two hits to take the lead before Adelphi was able to escape the inning. With two outs in the bottom half, Camera homered, scoring both her and Cuccio to lock the game at two apiece after the opening frame. The visitors were able to use one single sandwiched between two doubles to extend their lead to three to begin to pull away from the Southwest Division Regular Season Champions.

The Brown and Gold bats turned cold as Le Moyne hit a groove in which they faced four or less Adelphi bats over the next three innings. In that time they were able to add one in the third and three in the fourth to command a 9-2 lead. Rizzi registered a pinch-hit double to open up the fifth to get things started for the Panthers. The next three batters all recorded singles and a Brenna Martini home run allowed her team to remain in the game, trailing by just three.

Fealy gave up two hits in the sixth but the defense worked out of it, stranding both on the basepaths. Rizzi once more got the inning started with a double down the left field line, followed by Danielle Cutuli, who reached on an error. A Cuccio single up the middle plated Rizzi, bringing Adelphi within two. A bases loaded walk cut the Le Moyne lead to one and Camera drove in the next two runs with a single to left to take their first lead of the semifinal contest. The 'Phins collected the next two outs and returned to the plate for their last ups. Ally Nicolosi singled with one out but a strikeout from Sabrina Riley gave Megan Lewis the opportunity to end the game as she caught Nicolosi heading to second.

Adelphi heads back to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship after a one-year hiatus. They will play the #1 NE Warriors of Merrimack on Saturday, May 6 at noon. The schedule was altered due to impending weather, forcing both the quarterfinals and semifinals to be played on Thursday.
