Garden City, N.Y. - On a warm Thursday afternoon, the Adelphi University softball team returned to Janet L. Ficke Field for the opening game of a three-game series with Molloy College in the NCAA Division II East Super Regional. After trailing by three, the Panthers (38-14-1) attempted a comeback in the final inning but fell short, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Lions (36-16).
Two scoreless innings went by before either team struck, with the Lions plating three runs in the top half of the third inning. The second batter reached after an infield error and was later brought around by a bases-clearing double to left field courtesy of Milan Botte. The Panther defense escaped the inning, stranding one on the basepaths as starter
Lindsay Mapes recorded the final out by way of a popup.
Mapes went the distance for the hosts, completing all seven innings of work and scattering six hits throughout, only giving up three earned runs. Molloy College added one more run in the top of the sixth, to which Adelphi replied with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Megan Lewis, who posted a 2-for-3 performance at the plate scored on a Steph Staiano double to right center to break the silence.
The Lions threatened once more in the seventh, leaving one on base, giving Adelphi one more opportunity to win or extend the contest. With two outs and
Krista King on base, Martini (2-4, 2 RBI) belted her 18th homerun of the season to put the game within reach, as the home team trailed by just one. East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year Chelsea Hawks recorded the final out of the inning after also throwing a complete game, giving up three runs and allowing eight hits.
The softball team returns to the field on Friday, May 19 for game two of the series slated for 1:00 p.m. The Lions will act as the home team in the second set and if a third game is played, the teams will flip to decide, with a scheduled 3:30 p.m. start.
