Softball Downed in Extra Innings of East Super Regional

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team's run to the NCAA Division II Championship came to an end Friday afternoon after battling through extra innings against Molloy College. The Lions (37-16) took a 4-3 victory on Thursday and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth on Friday to advance to the College World Series.

The acting hosts put one run up in the bottom of the first half of the inning when Sarah Rambo drove in Milan Botte with a triple. Adelphi matched that run in the top of the next inning when Stephanie Staiano drove in Nicole Camera who reached by way of a single through the left side. The Panthers managed to take the lead when Brenna Martini drove in Krista King with a triple of her own in the third.

The Brown and Gold held onto said lead through the top of the sixth inning but Molloy came through in the bottom half with a game-tying run courtesy of Mikaela Tribby who singled up the middle scoring Erin Clinton. Both pitchers, who equally earned Pitcher of the Year for their respective conferences, worked through the seventh inning, forcing extra inning work.

Nicoletta Cuccio and Martini both reached in the top of the eighth, but Chelsea Hawks retired the final batter with a popup. After an intentional walk to start the inning, Molloy recorded three straight singles, the final one plating the game winning run to conclude the East Super Regional.

The Panthers finished the 2017 campaign at 38-15-1.
