Softball Secures Spot in NCAA Super Regional After 5-0 Win Over Wilmington

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team won it's eleventh straight contest Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Wilmington and advances to the NCAA Division II Super Regional for the fourth time since 2013. The Panthers (38-13-1) defeated the Wildcats (36-21) for the second time in the East 1 Region tournament after a first round 5-3 victory.

Brenna Martini got things started for the Brown and Gold in the top of the first inning after Nicoletta Cuccio (2-4, 2 runs) singled to the right side. With a full count and a stroke of the bat, Martini put the Panthers up 2-0. Wilmington managed to get a runner on in each of the next two innings but was unable to produce any runs to cut into the deficit.

Starter Lindsay Mapes went the distance for the acting visitors scattering just two hits through seven innings. She struck out two batters in both the third and fourth, en route to her eight total for the contest. Cuccio bunted a ball up the third base line turning it into an infield single as Kaitlyn Slater waited for it to turn foul but it never made it passed the white line. Martini was thrown four straight balls allowing Nicole Camera (1-3, 3 RBI) to step up to the plate. After fouling off three pitches, Camera sent the fourth to left field to tack three more runs, giving Adelphi a 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats were kept quiet for the remainder of the contest with runners only reaching base two other times as strong defense from the Panthers kept any runners from crossing the plate.

The team will host #2 Molloy College in a three-game series for the East Super Regional crown. Games will begin on Thursday, May 18 at Janet L. Ficke Field.
