Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team won a battle of conference champions on the second day of play in the NCAA Division II East 1 Regional on Friday, as the Northeast-10 Conference champions shut out the East Coast champion Mercy College Mavericks, 5-0.
Elisabeth Berard, who along with
Fallon McCarthy went 2-3 in the contest, scored two runs for the Brown and Gold (37-13-1) in the shutout, as she legged out an infield single to open the scoring in the second inning, and came all the way around to score as the throw went all the way down the right field line. The freshman added an insurance run herself in the 7th inning, as she again slapped the ball through the drawn infield and saw it roll all the way to the wall for an inside the park home run.Â
Adelphi's margin of one run stood for the duration of the contest in support of
Lindsay Mapes, who scattered six hits across her second straight complete game in two days of NCAA play. However, the Panthers added some room in support of the senior right-hander in the fifth inning, as they plated three runs on RBI doubles for
Brenna Martini and
Megan Lewis. Two walks on a combined eight straight balls from McKaily Cusumano brought Martini to the plate, who duly lined the first pitch she saw to left center to clear the bases. Lewis followed with a two-base hit of her own to score Martini and chase Cusumano from the game after 4.1 innings pitched.
Mercy left one runner on base in each of the first six innings against Mapes, getting just one in scoring position, before stranding a pair on in the seventh inning to end the game.
The Panthers advance to tomorrow's East 1 Regional final, to face an opponent to be determined after the conclusion of Saturday's play.Â
