Softball Sweeps Stonehill to End the Weekend on a High Note

North Easton, Mass. -- The Adelphi University softball team finished off its weekend of Northeast-10 Conference play on Sunday afternoon with back-to-back shutouts against the Stonehill College Skyhawks.

The Panthers (22-11-1, 13-3-0 NE10) nabbed a 13-0 victory in the opener and capped the doubleheader with a 11-0 sweep of the Skyhawks (6-21, 4-6 NE10) in game two, with both games ending after five innings. Brenna Martini, Nicoletta Cuccio and Stephanie Staiano combined for eight RBIs across the two games, while Christina Rizzi, Nicole Camera, and Lauren Sandelier totaled a three RBI effort in game one. Holding down the fort for the Panthers in the circle was Lindsay Mapes in the first and Jessica Vadala in the second, with Camera also appearing in relief.

Game 1
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the board in the opener, after Krista King reached on a throwing error by the Skyhawks third baseman, advancing to second to lead off the game. Cuccio led off the hit spree with a single to left center, to gain the first RBI of the inning. Hot bats at the top of the first flourished into a Martini double, a Sandelier walk, and Staiano single giving the Panthers the upper hand, to close the first with a 4-0 lead.

Emily Turney opened the top of the second with a triple, to put the Panthers in good position, before Danielle Cutuli with a good eye walked to first, followed by a Cuccio walk to load the bases. Martini singled to cash in two RBIs, for a 6-0 Panther lead. At the end of the second, the Panthers earned another four runs, holding eight. Stonehill was held scoreless, thanks to a Lindsay Mapes strikeout at the bottom of the second later on, and Adelphi managed to snag another four runs to take the 13-0 victory at the bottom of the fifth.

Game 2
Adelphi scored four runs in each of the first two innings to take command of the game, as Camera stroked a two-run homer in the first and Cuccio, Martini and Megan Lewis drove in runs in the second. After Cuccio also scored Elisabeth Berard in the third inning, the Panthers rounded out their scoring with two in the fifth on a Fallon McCarthy single and a Martini double. The second through fourth hitters in the Adelphi lineup (Cuccio-Martini-Camera) each scored a pair of runs in game two while driving in two with their bats as well.

Vadal got her second start in as many days in the circle in the second game, and after working around two singles in the bottom of the first allowed just one Skyhawk into scoring positoon over the next three innings. With the Adelphi lead standing at 11-0, Camera entered the game and recorded a 1-2-3 fifth to cap the sweep.

The softball team returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 when they take on Southern Connecticut State in a doubleheader at Janet L. Ficke field starting at 2:00 p.m.
