Rindge, NH - The Adelphi University men's lacrosse team won their eighth straight contest Saturday afternoon in a Northeast 10 meeting with Franklin Pierce University. The Panthers (9-1, 7-0 NE-10) put up a season-high 10 goals in the first quarter, en route to a 16-10 over the hosting Ravens ( 3-5, 1-5 NE10).
Leading the Brown and Gold offensively was
Ian Kirby, who finished with five points behind four goals and one assist. Also registering a hat trick in the win was
Nicolas Racalbuto as
Michael Osmundsen and
Shane deBoer each chipped in two goals of their own. Five additional members of the team accounted for solo goals and
Mark Andrejack scooped up a team-leading eight ground balls after a 15-21 afternoon at the faceoff.
Franklin Pierce was first to strike in the opening 15 minutes at the 12:26 mark, on a Ben Lassow goal. Adelphi quickly shifted momentum in their favor, rattling off three consecutive goals to force the home team to call a timeout. The quick break did not phase the Brown and Gold as they responded with four more goals in the following minutes, courtesy of
Chris Racalbuto,
Gerard Cunningham and deBoer. The hosts finally managed to win the faceoff and charge down field shooting past
Brendan McDougal (8 saves) for their second tally of the contest. In the first quarter alone the men put 13 shots on goal, compared to their opponents six to hold a 10-3 advantage after the opening 15 minutes.
Scoring definitely slowed in the second quarter as the teams put up an equal number of goals, despite the Ravens 14-6 advantage in shots. Coming out of the half both sides were scoreless until N. Racalbuto recorded his hat trick off a pass from Kirby. Minutes later after a good clear attempt from Adelphi, they scored again to lead 14-5 with under five to play in the third. FPU's Sean Delea capitalized on a man-up possession late in the period netting his 16th goal of the year to come within eight of the visitors.
The home team cut the deficit to seven but after the refs initiated the shot clock,
Michael Papach scored his second goal of the year to keep the hosts at bay. Scoring his first of the season minutes later was Michael Dluginski who extended the Panther lead to nine. Closing out regulation, Adelphi recorded four turnovers with which Franklin Pierce took advantage of scoring three goals in under four minutes to bring the score to it's eventual final decision of 16-10.
"The team came off the bus with a lot of confidence today and our patience in finding quality shots was evident early on," said Head Coach
Gordon Purdie.
The Adelphi men's lacrosse team is back in action on Tuesday, April 11 when they host Pace University at 7:00 p.m. Donations for the Down Syndrome Advocacy Foundation will be taken at the door and throughout the contest after members of each team host a small clinic prior to opening faceoff.
