Garden City, N.Y. - After being held scoreless in the third quarter, the Adelphi men's lacrosse program dropped a 10-6 final decision to No. 8 Pace University Tuesday evening. This loss snaps the eight-game win streak and marks the unblemished conference record with their first loss in Northeast 10 play.
The Panthers (9-2, 7-1 NE10) offense was held to their least amount of goals all season, with
Shane deBoer accounting for two and four other teammates chipping in solo goals.
Brendan McDougal spent all 60 minutes in goal, allowing 10 goals but picking up 11 saves in the loss. At the faceoff
Mark Andrejack was 12-19, with four ground balls. For the Setters (7-2, 5-2 NE10) Joshua Kreitler netted four goals and Liam Brennan was responsible for four points behind two goals and two assists.
After a wide shot from
John Arcidiacono, deBoer tallied his 11th of the season to strike first for the home team in the battle of USILA Top-10 teams. The Brown and Gold managed to extend their lead under a minute later, when a pushing penalty awarded the hosts a man-up possession.
Michael Osmundsen connected with
Ian Kirby and again with deBoer at the 9:06 mark to take a three-goal lead. Nearly two minutes went by until Pace got their first goal but the home team ended the quarter with a 4-1 advantage.
Adelphi and the Setters traded goals to start the second, with the visitors scoring once more before the half expired to trail by two. In the last seven minutes of action of the first half both teams managed shots but at the break goalkeepers McDougal and Robert Beshlian had registered five saves apiece. Matthew Simone and John Kelly took control of the scoring opening the second half of play to quickly even the score at 5-5. Several shots by the Panthers prior to the Setters scoring landed on goal or ricocheted off the post.
Shots off the mark and timely saves for both teams saw the third quarter quickly expire as the teams remained locked at five. Momentum started to swing toward the Setters when they took their first lead of the contest at 12:53 in the final frame, but the home team was quick to answer with a goal courtesy of
Chris Racalbuto less than a minute later. A Panther turnover, coupled with a rebounded shot of the post allowed Brennan find a way past McDougal between the scramble in front of the next to regain the lead. The home team put up two shots on goal before the Setters extended their lead as they continued to press on offense and move the ball around the home team en route to a 10-6 final. Adelphi managed four shots in the closing minutes, but it was too late as time expired, handing them their first NE10 loss.
The men's lacrosse program is back in action on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to take on Bentley University at 1:00 p.m., in Waltham, Mass.
