Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team just missed scoring 20 goals in a Northeast 10 conference matchup with Merrimack College Saturday afternoon. The win marks the Panthers (10-0, 8-0 NE10) tenth straight victory to remain perfect in league action.
Jacqueline Jahelka notched a team-leading seven points behind two goals and five assists
Kate Beier paced the offense with four goals.
Michele Scannell and
Alison Johnson followed suit with hat tricks of their own as
Kole Pollock chipped in two goals and one assist. Five additional players rounded out the scoring with lone goals in the victory. For Merrimack (3-8, 1-6 NE10) Annette Ruggiero was responsible for the Warriors single goal.
Scannell started the scoring for the Panthers, opening up with a goal less than two minutes into the game. Jahelka netted her 35th goal of the season less than 30 seconds later and within five minutes the hosts took a 3-0 lead when
Casey Zalewski and
Alyssa Gillespie connected. Nearly ten minutes elapsed before either team scored again, after Merrimack was struck with turnovers and Lauren Trepaney grabbed two of her 11 saves.
In the remaining minutes of the first half
Allison Stackpole netted her third goal of her career and added an assist to Beier's second of the contest. The Panthers broke for the locker room with an 18-1 shot-on-goal advantage and 9-0 lead. Adelphi rattled off three straight goals to start the second frame, stretching their cushion to 12.
The Brown and Gold capitalized on 10 turnovers from the Warriors in the second frame alone as strong defense allowed them to capture nine caused turnovers throughout the game. Ryley and
Shea Weber both won two draw controls and combined for seven ground balls and five caused turnovers on defense. After spending a good amount of time in their offensive territory, Peterson (one save) was met by Ruggiero who netted the visitors only goal at the 18.48 mark.
Chelsea Abreu, who won a team-high three draw controls in the win scored late in the second after
Allison Schneider sent her a pass and the final goal of the game cam from
Nicki Stanco who was assisted by
Kateri Brooks to cap the contest.
Adelphi women's lacrosse returns to action on Wednesday, April 12 for a 6:00 p.m. meeting with the University of New Haven on Motamed Field.
