Women's Lacrosse Bests #12 New Haven in Wednesday Night Battle

Garden City, N.Y. - In a battle of top-15 IWLCA teams, the No. 1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program bested No. 12 University of New Haven in Northeast 10 Conference action Wednesday evening.

The Panthers (11-0, 9-0 NE10) were led by Alison Johnson and Jacqueline Jahelka, who both produced four goals for their team. Johnson coupled her goals with three assists in the win, for a team-leading seven points. Michele Scannell and Kate Beier were both responsible for hat tricks as two additional players got in on the scoring action en route to the 18-9 final decision. On defense, Shea Weber accounted for four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Adelphi opened the contest with four unanswered goals, two coming out of the stick of Jahelka. New Haven's Mackenzie Reh netted the visitors first of the game at the 20:10 mark to halt the shutout. They cut the host lead in half with another goal nearly five minutes later courtesy of Reh. The Panthers, unsatisfied netted their next four goals over the following eight minutes of action to extend their lead to six.

Closing out the opening frame and starting the second, the Charger offense quickly swung momentum in their favor. Kendall Cietek scored both in the first and two teammates netted shots past Hailey Peterson in the second half to come within two once more of the top-ranked Panthers. Around the 25-minute mark the teams traded goals to remain within reach of each other but Beier sparked a six-goal scoring spree for the Brown and Gold to quickly set the game out of reach.

The 6-0 run was bookmarked with goals from Jahelka, Scannell and Kole Pollock to lead 16-8 with just under ten minutes left in regulation. Cietek completed her hat trick with New Haven's fourth goal of the half, but it was not enough as Casey Zalewksi slammed the door with the hosts' final tally at 1:39. As a team Adelphi was only 4-10 in free position shots but held the advantage in all categories on the final stat sheet.

Peterson finished the contest with six saves, collecting three in each half of action and the home team was a perfect 18-18 in clear attempts.

Next up the Panthers host LIU Post on Saturday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. The alumni from both teams will match up prior to game time at 10:30 a.m. Admission for Saturday's game is $8, with all proceeds benefiting Pediatric Cancer.
