Bats Largely Silent as Baseball Falls to Saint Thomas Aquinas, 3-1

Garden City, N.Y. -- Held to just one run on two hits, the Adelphi University baseball team dropped a 3-1 non-conference decision to the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Friday on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.

The Panthers (14-12) have scored one run or fewer in five of their last six games, dropping all but one of those contests, as the Spartans evened the season series after dropping a 5-2 decision in Adelphi's season-opener.

John Bednarek allowed just one run and two hits in nine innings for the Spartans (17-10), as Steven Withers and Eric Hassell recorded Adelphi's two hits.

The Panthers scored the first run of the game in their opening turns at bat, as Withers led off with a single, stole second and came around thanks to two ground balls, with Robert Vani getting the RBI. However, the Spartans hit back with two runs in the top of the second off Tom Ambrosino, as two hit batters and a single loaded the bases with two outs before Nicholas Luchesse came through in the clutch with a two-run single.

Adelphi's lone base-runner in the next four innings came thanks to Hassell's fourth-inning single, and though the Panthers later got two on thanks to an error and a walk in the sixth, they were unable to score again against Bednarek. A four-pitch walk to Vani brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Bednarek struck out Michael Cattani, his final punch out of five, to end the game.

The Panthers return to Northeast-10 Conference play on Sunday, April 9 when they travel to Assumption College for a 12 pm double-header.
