Baseball Powers to Sweep of Assumption, 6-2 and 15-1

Worcester, Mass. -- Runs were the story for the Adelphi University baseball team on Sunday, as the Panthers scored a combined 21 at the plate en route to a Northeast-10 Conference sweep of Assumption, 6-2 and 15-1.

A four-run seventh helped Adelphi (16-12, 6-5 NE10) rally from a 2-0 deficit in game one as Michael Cattani drove in three runs in the late innings, while Thomas Colombo and Brett Malm each drove in four in the nightcap, with Colombo recording a career-high 3-3 day with four RBI and three runs scored.

Game 1
Junior Tom Horstkotte took the mound in game one for Assumption and cruised through six innings without surrendering a run, matching zeros with TJ Santiago until the Adelphi ace surrendered two in the sixth on the back of three straight Assumption singles and an error. However, the Panthers quickly responded in the top of the seventh, as Brandon Morse worked a leadoff walk and Kory Cassara  singled to set the table before pinch-hitter Tyler Becker also walked to load the bases with one out. From there, the first Panther run crossed the plate on a Steven Withers sac fly to center, before Jonathan Iadevaia singled to left to plate the tying run.

That chased Horstkotte from the game, and Adelphi played small ball to take the lead after a Robert Vani single against loaded the bases, taking the lead on a wild pitch and leading 4-2 as Cattani was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Santiago went 1-2-3 in the seventh with two strikeouts after being handed the lead, and worked around a hit batter in the eighth to cap his day with eight innings and a career-high 13 strikeouts.

Cattani plated two more in the ninth, sending home Iadevaia and Vani, who had singled to the infield and doubled respectively, to open up insurance in the ninth,  before David Butler came in to wrap the game after allowing a leadoff single in the ninth.

Game 2
Adelphi scored in innings two through seven in game two, which included scoring a combined eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Assumption's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Trevor McQuade launched his third home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field wall.

Morse stroked a two-run double in the second to open Adelphi's scoring, as four of Adelphi's RBI hits in the game were for extra bases. Morse later tripled to center field in the fourth for another RBI, while Colombo stroked an RBI single in the third, and RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, April 11th for a single game against the University of Bridgeport at 3:30 pm.
