New Haven, Conn. -- A dramatic seventh-inning comeback helped the Adelphi University softball team sweep Southern Connecticut State on the road on Wednesday, as the Panthers turned a 4-0 deficit into a 6-4 win in game one, before edging a 3-1 win in game two.
A quad-effort took the lead in game one, with
Brenna Martini and
Nicoletta Cuccio combining with four RBIs consecutively in the seventh inning comeback alongside
Emily Turney and
Krista King, as Adelphi totaled six runs in the last inning at the plate. After the dramatic win, Martini, Cuccio and
Lauren Sandelier were responsible for the sole three runs of the second game.
Game 1
The first half of the game panned out in favor of the Owls (3-14, 1-6 NE10), as they scored a run in the third, fourth and two in the fifth on a  BryAnna McIntosh homer. With Adelphi (18-11-1, 9-3 NE10) in its last at bats in the seventh, Sandelier and Stephanie Staiano stroked one-out singles, before two SCSU errors, a wild pitch and a walk led to a run and loaded the bases.
From there, a single for King and back-to-back doubles for Cuccio and Martini turned a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 lead. After Lindsay Mapes exited after five innings, Jessica Vadala got the win thanks to a scoreless sixth and seventh, as she slammed the door by retiring the side for her fourth win of the season.
Game 2
After Cuccio was hit by a pitch, a Martini single drove her home for the RBI, putting Adelphi on the board. After Kristin Fealy went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, two walks and a single loaded the bases for Adelphi until Cuccio flied out to center field, advancing Fallon McCarthy for the second RBI early on for the Panthers.
The Owls immediately answered at the bottom of the second inning, as Victoria Ceballos led off with a single and came around to score later in the frame, putting them behind by only one run at 2-1.
Sandelier added the third and final RBI of the second contest with a single in the fifth, advancing Martini to take Adelphi's last run. Southern Connecticut left the bases loaded in the fifth and another runner on in the sixth as they looked to tie the game, before Vadala picked up the save with three popouts in the seventh.
Adelphi returns to action in Waltham, Mass. on Saturday, April 8 when they take on Bentley in an NE10 doubleheader matchup beginning at 12:00 pm.
