Baseball Snaps Skid with 4-1 Victory Over Pace

Garden City. N.Y. -- The Adelphi University baseball team snapped a four-game skid and handed the Pace University Setters their first Northeast-10 Conference loss on Wednesday, coming away with a 4-1 victory on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.

A three-run second inning gave Adelphi (14-11, 4-5 NE10) nearly all the offense it would need on the afternoon, as Michael Stack drove in a pair with a two-out single up the middle and Steven Withers followed with an RBI single of his own to push the Panthers out to a 3-0 lead. Withers and Brett Malm both had multiple-hit days at the top of the Adelphi lineup, while Kory Cassara and Michael Cattani went a combined 4-7 with two runs scored down in the order.

Daniel Taggart had one of his best efforts on the season thus far for the Panthers in the start, as the sophomore tossed five scoreless innings, and allowed one run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. He gave way to David Butler, who tossed three scoreless innings with a trio of strikeouts before Michael Tarpey sealed the deal in the ninth for his first save of the season.

After Pace (15-8, 5-1 NE10) got on the board with a double and a sacrifice fly in the fifth off Taggart, three walks to Malm, Eric Hassell and Cattani loaded the bases with two down, as the Panthers chased Setter starter Dan Wirchansky. With Cassara at the plate, reliever Kevin Wiltse uncorked a wild pitch allowing Malm to score and make it 4-1 in favor of Adelphi.

Pace got just two runners on in innings six through eighth, but had an opportunity in the ninth inning facing a three-run deficit. Butler surrendered a leadoff single to give way to Tarpey, who had to face two on with one out after an error in the field. However, with the tying run at the plate, Tarpey responded, inducing a foul out and striking out pinch hitter James Wynne swinging to end the game.

Adelphi is back in action on Friday, hosting Saint Thomas Aquinas in a 3:30 pm non-conference contest.
