Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Celebrates 6 Seniors, Tops St. A's 19-2

Garden City, N.Y. - Saturday afternoon started with the celebration of six members of the Adelphi women's lacrosse program, who will finish up their careers wearing the Brown and Gold at the conclusion of this season. Kate Beier, Jen Graham, Jill Graziano, Jacqueline Jahelka, Ryley Weber, and Casey Zalewski were all recognized for their accomplishments over the past four years, which includes three Northeast-10 Conference titles and two NCAA Divison II National Championship crowns. The team then went on to secure a 19-2 victory over visiting Saint Anselm to improve to 15-1 overall this year.

Nine different players scored with Kole Pollock leading the charge with a team-high four goals. She finished the contest with six points after adding two helpers as Zalewski and Beier also recorded hat tricks. Alison Johson collected all four of her points courtesy of helping her teammates score and Michele Scannell won a game-high six draw controls. Ryley and Shea Weber and Kaitlyn Stackpole each chipped in three caused turnovers on defense.

The home team wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as they registered their first goal in the opening minute and had a 5-0 lead after five minutes of play. The Panthers outshot the visiting Hawks (6-11, 4-9 NE10) 19-3 in the first half alone, en route to a 15-1 lead at the break. Alyssa Gillespie added her sixth of her rookie campaign before another tally from Zalewski forced a running clock on the contest. Saint A's did not break the silence until a caused turnover in their defensive end turned into a good clear which they converted for a Breda Holland goal at 5:15 in the opening.

Coming out of the locker room, the Brown and Gold tacked on two quick goals, this time courtesy of Beier and Graziano. Over the following 15 minutes the hosts were plagued with several turnovers but the Hawks suffered from failed clear attempts  halting scoring for either side. Nicki Stanco came in to net her fifth of the season and another failed clear attempt allowed Chandley Borges to get in on the action for her second score of the year.

A late turnover for Adelphi allowed the Hawk's Erica Mattila to face Tamar Epps one on one for her first of the contest, but time quickly expired handing the Panthers their third straight win.

The women's lacrosse team heads into the NE10 conference tournament as the No. 2 seed. The team will host a quarterfinal contest on Wednesday, May 3 at 7 PM, against No. 7 Bentley University. For full bracket information, visit northeast10.org.
