Flushing, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University baseball team began a home-and-home series against the Knights of Queens College on Saturday, suffering a walk-off 4-3 loss in game one before bouncing back with a 9-0 shutout in game two.
Game 1
Queens got a run in the second and another in the third off
Daniel Taggart, keeping the lead for six of the game's seven innings. Three singles, including an RBI knock to left by Ryan Bender plated the game's first run, and Joseph Pidoto cracked a two-out solo home run to left to double the home team's lead in the second.
Limited to just two hits over the first five innings, the Brown and Gold got on the board in the sixth, as
Jonathan Iadevaia came around to score on an
Eric Hassell RBI single. An inning later,
Michael Stack legged out an infield single before scoring the tying run on a
Steven Withers triple, and Adelphi took the lead 3-2 as Withers came home on Iadevaia's sac fly.
Nonetheless, the Knights' rally was quickly ignited in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff infield single, a hit batter and a walk against
Michael Tarpey, before Pidoto plated the tying run on a fielder's choice and Andrew Navarez drove in the winning run on a bunt single.
Game 2
A three-run first inning provided more than enough offense for the Panthers in game two, as the Adelphi arms held the Knights scoreless despite nine hits. The Brown and Gold did a little bit of everything in the first inning, getting on the board as
Steven Withers stole home after leading off with a single. From there, a Hassell sacrifice fly scored Iadevaia, and
Brett Malm homered to cap the scoring.
A five-spot in the sixth broke the game open for Adelphi, as a two-run single for
Camden Orologio highlighted the inning. Iadevaia,
Robert Vani and Malm all singled, with Malm plating the game's fourth run, ahead of Orologio, who made it a 6-0 game with one out. After a pitching change,
Michael Stack drove in another run ahead of a
Zack Levinson single that loaded the bases, with the final Adelphi run coming home on a Withers sacrifice fly.
Prior to the start of Sunday's game against Queens on Bonomo Field, the team will honor its 10 graduating seniors. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
