Softball Claims Divisional Series with 8-3 Win at Pace

Pleasantville, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University softball program traveled to Pace University Thursday to play the series finale after a postponement Wednesday afternoon. A solid bottom of the first kept the Panthers (29-13-1, 18-5 NE10) rolling en route to an 8-3 victory over the Setters (17-19, 11-11 NE10).

Back-to-back walks coupled with a Nicole Camera hit by pitch quickly filled the bases in bottom of the first frame. Adelphi, despite playing at Pace's home field was acting as the home team. With no where to go a Megan Lewis homer sent everyone home, allowing the Brown and Gold to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

The Setters struggled to push any runs across, opening the door for Adelphi to continue to find opportunities to score. The bottom of the third started opened with a Martini walk to first, followed by a Camera reach to first on a fielder's choice, getting Martini out at second. Although it seemed Pace was working out of a jam, Lewis reached and shortly after, Stephanie Staiano came up with a triple down the right line collecting two RBI, extending the home team lead to six.

The Setters played a quick game of catch up at the top of the fifth with a Nikole Larm homer putting their first run on the board, however it wasn't enough to close the gap. Camera took the spotlight at the bottom of the fifth, with a homer to left field, plating both her and Martini. The Panthers maintained the upper hand, despite Pace's several attempts to answer including a solo homer from Stephanie Wang and another run that cut the lead to five. The rest of the game went steady, neither team putting up anymore runs to leave AU with the 8-3 win.

Lindsay Mapes threw 5.2 innings with the start to earn her 13th win of the year thus far. She allowed seven hits for three runs but struck out four along the way, as solid defense kept the Pace scoring to a minimum. Jessica Vadala came into the game for 1.1 scoreless innings of work, giving up just one hit.

The Panthers return to action on their home field Friday, April 28 when they take on American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
