Softball Ousts American Int'l Twice, Marking Third Straight 30+ Win Season

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team earned back-to-back wins Friday afternoon over American International College to break the 30-win mark for the third straight season. The Yellow Jackets (16-21, 13-11) return to Janet L. Ficke on Saturday, April 30 to conclude the regular season.

Nicole Camera put up serious numbers at the dish through both games, combining to go 3-for-5 with four RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Nicoletta Cuccio, Krista King, and Brenna Martini were also responsible for three hits apiece together scoring of the Panthers 14 runs. Lindsay Mapes and Kristin Fealy both walked away with wins in the divisional matchup, only giving up five runs to the Yellow Jackets.

Game One
Both teams were scoreless through the opening two innings, until AIC broke the silence with a lone run in the top of the third. A bases-loaded single put the Yellow Jackets ahead, a lead they extended to two in the fifth as a triple plated Keymell Cartwright. Adelphi was quickly playing catchup, but a three-run fifth swung momentum in the hosts favor. Camera recorded an infield single which sent Cuccio home for the first tally of the game. A bases-loaded walk coupled with a Fallon McCarthy single added two more and gave AU the lead.

Mapes and the Panther defense retired the side in the sixth, sending the offense back to work in the latter half inning. The Brown and Gold were able to string three singles together, with King scooting home on a Martini single up the middle. Camera followed up with a two-RBI triple that pushed the host lead to four. Megan Lewis cranked a sacrifice fly that plated the final run of the contest, as the Yellow Jackets could not come within reach, dropping the first 7-2.

Jessica Vadala came in for one inning of scoreless work in which she gave up one hit. Starter Mapes allowed four hits and fanned seven along the way.

Game Two
The Panthers used a three-run first inning to lift them once more over visiting AIC in game two, where they took a 7-3 decision. Camera, Lewis and Lauren Sandelier were all responsible for driving in the three runs in the first, the only runs the home team would have until the fourth inning. Fealy improved to 7-6 this season with five complete innings in which she only surrendered five hits and three runs- the only runs of the contest for AIC.

Adelphi added one run quickly in the fourth when a bases-loaded walked plated Cuccio as Martini cleared the bases in the next at-bat to put the home team up 7-0. The visiting Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the fifth when a two-out single from Yami Lopez-Perez sent Kayla Riley and Lydia DePina home, but the home team defense worked out of the jam before any more damage was done. American Int'l tacked on one more run in the following frame, after two straight doubles allowed Jill Bedard and Jess Lingenberg to trade places but Vadala worked tirelessly to escape the inning en route to a sweep.

Prior to tomorrow's doubleheader, the Adelphi softball program will honor the accomplishments of four seniors in Danielle Cutuli, Lindsay Mapes, Fallon McCarthy and Stephanie Staiano, the graduating class of 2017. First pitch for the opener is scheduled for noon.
