Naw Haven, Conn. - Stroking just six hits to the hosts' 13, the Adelphi University baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon.
The Owls (22-10-1, 9-1 NE10) touched up
Ed Baram early, to the tune of three runs in the second and two in the third innings to put Adelphi (21-19, 11-9 NE10) behind 5-0. SCSU starter Brendan Ebert scattered just four hits over seven innings, throwing five shutout frames until
Eric Hassell drove in
Steven Withers in the top of the sixth.
A two-run double for Griffin Gara got the Owls on the board in the second, with the third Owls' run coming home as Jim Palmer reached on an error. The home team's momentum continued in the bottom of the third after Adelphi went down in order, as Kyle Hart singled with two down before coming home on Mike DeMarti's RBI double. In the next at bat, Connor Redah singled to right to score DeMarti for the game's fifth run.
Robert Vani was the lone Panther to record two hits in the setback, going 2-4, as Withers and
Jonathan Iadevaia each scored a run. Iadevaia drew a leadoff walk pinch-hitting in the ninth, and came around to score as
Camden Orologio doubled him home with two outs.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 29, when they travel to Queens College to begin a three-game series with a double-header. First pitch is slated for 12 pm.
