Softball Outlasts Pace, Game Two Postponed

Garden City, N.Y. - With cloudy overcast skies, the Adelphi University softball program took to Janet L. Ficke Field for a makeup game of the scheduled series against Pace University Wednesday afternoon. Despite trailing after four innings and acting as the visitors, the Panthers (28-13-1, 17-5 NE10) put up runs in each of the following innings to secure a 7-6 victory over the Setters (17-18, 12-9 NE10).

Acting as the home team, Pace was first to light up the scoreboard, tacking on two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. Adelphi managed to cut into that lead in the fourth frame, when a Krista King single up the middle plated Elisabeth Berard, sparking the rest of the offense. For the Setters, Ashley Lew - who was 3-3 with one run scored at the plate- was the lone baserunner in the latter half of the inning, but was caught stealing by Nicoletta Cuccio to clear the bases.

The first two batters for the visitors reached safely and quickly got into scoring position, just to cross home when Christina Rizzi reached on an error, allowing Adelphi to take their first lead of the contest. Lindsay Mapes retired the side in the next frame allowing her teammates to get to work at the plate. With two on, Nicole Camera belted a triple to right center to extend the lead and then scored herself when Steph Staiano reached via another miscue by the Pace defense.

Cuccio scored in the seventh, adding another tally to the Panther side to take a four-run lead with one half inning to play. Not going down without a fight, the Setters managed four runs on five hits, but Adelphi escaped with the win as the final batter grounded out to the pitcher. Mapes earns the win after throwing five innings, allowing five hits and two runs while fanning six along the way. Camera closed out the meeting in relief, with five hits in two innings of work.

The Panthers will return to Pace on Thursday, April 27 to play the series finale with the Setters. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
