Springfield, Mass. -- A walk-off in game one and a seven-inning affair in game two handed the Adelphi University baseball team a pair of defeats at American International College on Sunday, 6-5 and 5-2.
Adelphi (21-18, 11-8 NE10), led 5-1 in game one as late as the seventh inning thanks to a strong effort on the mound for
Daniel Taggart, before the home team put up a four-spot in the bottom of the inning and delivered the walk-off run on an infield single. In game two, AIC put up two in the bottom of the first and never relinquished the lead in the seven-inning victory.
Game 1
Adelphi gave Taggart three runs in the top of the first, as four singles and two hit batters by AIC starter Ryan Bruning led to two, before
Michael Cattani drove in the third on a fielder's choice. The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the third, with B. Carter walking with one out, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a _ RBI double.
However, Taggart limited the damage from there, working around at least one base-runner in two of the next three innings to keep it a 3-1 game. The Brown and Gold added a pair in the seventh on a two-run double from
Eric Hassell that chased home
Steven Withers and
Tyler Becker, making the lead 5-1.
Nonetheless, two hits and two errors led to four AIC runs in the bottom of the frame against
David Butler, as a two-run single for Mike Wroth highlighted the inning for AIC. Though Adelphi got two runners on in the eighth, nothing came of the final offensive opportunity, as the Yellow Jackets rallied to win the game in the their last at-bats though the ball never left the infield.
Josh Aviles legged out an infield single to begin the inning and advanced to second after Matt Krause was hit by a pitch. Both runners then moved up on a wild pitch, and the Aviles scored the game-winner on an infield single to third by Wroth.
Game 2
The start of game two against saw the Yellow Jackets play small but successful baseball, as the ball never left the infield against
Andrew Sesto. An infield single, walk, wild pitch, and a groundout led to 2-0 and put Adelphi behind in the early going.
Singles for
Kevin Krippel and Withers saw Adelphi get the tying runs on in the third, but they were unable to score, and AIC added a third run in the bottom of the frame on a one-out double and a two-out RBI single for KJ White. The Panthers' first run of the game came later in the fourth, as
Thomas Colombo led off with a single, was put in scoring position by a Hasell single and came home on an RBI single for
Lawrence Cicileo to make it 3-1 AIC.
However, the Yellow Jackets quelled the Panther momentum in the bottom of the fourth, as a double and two walks loaded the bases against
Tom Ambrosino and the home team added two runs on a costly two-base error with two outs. Hassell got a run back for the Panthers in the sixth, as he finished the day 4-8 at the plate with four RBIs.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, April 26, as they travel to Southern Conn. State for a 3:30 pm single game.
