Women's Lacrosse Cruises to 19-4 Decision Over Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's lacrosse program saw 10 different players contribute on offense in a 19-4 Northeast 10 Conference victory against Assumption College Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (13-1, 10-1 NE10) were led by senior attacker Jacqueline Jahelka, who finished the game with seven points behind three goals and four assists. Also scoring hat tricks in the win were Kate Beier, Alison Johnson, and Casey Zalewski, all collecting five or more points. Shea Weber was responsible for four draw controls and caused three turnovers and scooped three ground balls, as Chelsea Abreu won a team-best five draw controls in the victory.

The home team wasted no time on the offensive front, scoring less than a minute into the contest. Johnson's 29:12 goal sparked a 10-0 run in favor of the Brown and Gold to push the contest to running time around the halfway mark of the first half. The Greyhounds (7-7, 5-6 NE10) converted a free position attempt for their first tally of the game, but Adelphi answered with four more to hold a 13-goal lead at halftime.

Coming out of the break, Assumption won the draw control and on a fast break into their offensive zone added their second goal of the NE10 matchup, as Amanda Burns notched her 33rd strike of the season. Chelsea Abreu scored first for AU in the second half, extending the host advantage back to 13 with nearly the entire half left to play. Scoring halted for either team over the next six minutes however, courtesy of strong defense and several turnovers.

Jahelka netted back-to-back goals after the 19-minute mark and assisted Beier on her fourth of the game just minutes later. The home team commanded much of the game in their offensive territory as six different players won a team total of 15 draw controls. The Panthers also converted 5-of-6 free position shots and took a 31-8 advantage in shots.

The Greyhounds scored the last two goals of the game but it was not enough as the game was set out of reach in the early going by the home team. Minding the net for the visitors, Jaclyn Chirco collected six saves.

The women's lacrosse program is back in regular season action on Wednesday, April 26 when they travel to take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce. Opening draw is set for 4:30 p.m.
