Softball Sweeps Le Moyne on Sunday to End Series

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team finished off a three-game divisional series with Le Moyne College Sunday afternoon, after falling 3-0 in the first game on Saturday. The Panthers (16-11-1, 7-4-0 NE10) picked up a 3-2 victory in the opener and clinched the sweep of the Dolphins (18-8, 1-2-0 NE10) with a 9-3 win in game two.

Brenna Martini posted a 3-for-4 afternoon at the plate with three walks and three RBI, posting an .857 on-base-percentage through both games. Kailah Konkel was 2-for-3 with one RBI as Nicoletta Cuccio and Nicole Camera both drove in two runs apiece. Going the distance for the Panthers on Sunday was Lindsay Mapes in the first and Kristin Fealy in the second, both throwing complete games.

Game One
The Dolphins wasted no time getting on the board in the opener, after a leadoff triple got Courtney Case into scoring position. The next batter grounded out to shortstop, but picked up the RBI as Case scooted home. Adelphi was held scoreless until the bottom half of the third inning, but not before the visitors were able to tack on another run to take the 2-0 lead. Elisabeth Berard was plated on an RBI groundout from Cuccio to cut the deficit in half.

Le Moyne threatened with runners in the sixth, but strong defense from the field allowed the hosts to get back on offense. Cuccio reached on an infield single to start the inning and was able to take her time rounding the bases as Camera came up big two batters later with a home run over the left field fence. The Brown and Gold headed to the final frame with a one-run lead and held on for the victory as Mapes retired three of four batters faced. The hurler gave up eight hits but fanned six along the way to improve to 9-5 this season.

Game Two
Fealy got the start in game two and came out in the top of the first retiring the first three batters in order. After Le Moyne put up a run in the top half of the second, Adelphi responded with three runs of their own, as Lauren Sandelier and Steph Staiano both reached on singles to get it started. Emily Turney bounced a single off the shin of the first baseman, which trickled into the dugout, plating both baserunners and giving the hosts the lead. They added one more when Kailah Konkel doubled an at-bat later to score Turney.

The Dolphins added solo runs in the third and fifth but in between AU's bats got hot in the fourth. With two outs King and Cuccio got on base with back-to-back singles, followed by Martini, who saw three pitches and sent the fourth out of the yard, lifting the team to a four-run lead. Adelphi kept Le Moyne quiet for the remainder of the contest, despite two reaching in the sixth. Konkel sparked a three-run sixth inning with her leadoff single, to be later brought around on a Cuccio double. Sandelier drove in Camera for the final run of the game as Fealy threw all seven and struck out five for the win.

The softball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 when they take on Southern Connecticut State at the Owls' home field starting at 2:00 p.m.
