Softball Drops Extra Inning Battle at Pace, Game Two Postponed

Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team fell in the Northeast 10 opener 10-8 at Pace University Wednesday afternoon, as the nightcap was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Panthers (27-13-1, 17-6 NE10) only put up five hits, courtesy of five different members of the team, compared to 10 hits from the hosts, in the game one loss. Danielle Cutuli and Krista King both recorded extra-base hits and Nicoletta Cuccio added a two-run RBI, but the Setters 16-13, 10-7 NE10) put up one grand slam and one two-RBI round-tripper en route to the victory.

Game 1
The Panthers were retired in order besides a walk for Brenna Martini in the top of the first, and the visitor defense was met with hot bats from Pace in the bottom half. A grand slam by Larissa Labs put up four quick runs for the hosts and the next three batters reached on consecutive walks to load the bases once more. The Setters drove in two more to command a 6-0 lead after one inning of work.

Adelphi got themselves on the board with a sacrifice fly by Fallon McCarthy, to plate Lauren Sandelier in their next at-bats to cut into the deficit. Martini reached on an error, adding another run as Cuccio crossed home. The next two innings went by without any change despite several runners being stranded on the basepaths.

Attempting to play a quick game of catch up, Staiano drew a walk in the top of the sixth before a Megan Lewis single to center field triggered the run parade. Cuccio plated two runs on a home run to left field to end the inning and give the visitors their first lead of the contest. The sixth featured six runs on four hits, forcing a pitching change mid-inning for the Setters.

Pace brought it back to even at the bottom of the sixth with two runs, knotting the score at 8-8. Adelphi made an attempt to break the deadlock, but were unable to string anything together, forcing extra innings. With the chance to come back the Brown and Gold left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth but couldn't push across any runs. After Labs singled with one away, Larm blasted a two-run homer over the left-field fence, giving Pace the walkoff 10-8 victory.

Notes:
Game two was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled for Tuesday, April 25 at Janet L. Ficke Field. Time is to-be-determined.
