Garden City, N.Y. -
Ed Baram hurled seven innings of one-run baseball and struck out a career-high 10 to lead the Adelphi University baseball team to its second win over Pace University on Tuesday afternoon, 5-1.
Despite allowing eight hits and four walks, Baram worked in and out of trouble throughout much of his outing, which saw him work out of three bases-loaded jams over the course of seven innings. On the offensive side for Adelphi (20-15, 10-6 NE10),
Robert Vani hit his third home run of the season, and second in the last three games, as part of a 3-4 day with two RBI. Vani was the only Panther to collect more than one hit, as
Steven Withers and
Brandon Morse also drove in runs against Pace (22-11, 11-4 NE10) starter Dan Wirchansky.
A double and two walks loaded the bases against Baram in the first, but the sophomore was up to the task, getting a strikeout and a lineout to center to work out of his first jam of the day. The Panthers responded in kind with two runs in the bottom of the inning, as
Brett Malm tripled and came home on a fly ball off Vani's bat which was dropped in left, leading to the senior landing on third. Vani later came home on Morse's single up the middle, staking Baram to a 2-0 lead after one.Â
Baram stranded four runners over the next three innings, in part by recording four strikeouts, before Adelphi doubled its lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Eric Hassell smoked a leadoff double before he advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came around to score on the same play as Pace catcher Frank Mayo threw the ball into left field. Later in the inning, a
Michael Stack popup to the infield was also dropped by Mayo, as the senior hustled to second, and came home on Withers' two-out single to center field.Â
After getting out of another bases loaded jam in the fifth thank to a double play off the bat of Cory Capaldi, Baram had his best inning in the sixth as he struck out the side swinging to keep the 5-0 shutout in tact. Though he allowed a run in the seventh on three singles and a walk, a popup and fielder's choice ended his day ahead, 5-1. With Baram having done much of the hard work,
David Butler finished things off for Adelphi. pitching the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
The Panthers hit the road this weekend for a three-game series with American International College, beginning with a 12 pm double-header on Saturday.
