Syracuse, N.Y. - In their lowest scoring game of the season, Adelphi University women's lacrosse suffered a 5-4 defeat at Le Moyne College Tuesday afternoon. This marks the first loss for the Panthers (12-1, 9-1 NE10) of the 2017 season and the first loss to the Dolphins (13-0, 10-0 NE10) since the conference championship in 2013.
Kate Beier was the leading scorer for Adelphi, netting two goals, including one free position shot.
Jacqueline Jahelka and
Alison Johnson each accounted for one goal to round out the scoring for the visiting Panthers as
Hailey Peterson picked up her first loss of the season, despite collecting eight saves. Le Moyne saw five different members score in the victory, with goalkeeper Hannah George accounting for six saves in the win.
Both teams were plagued with turnovers in the opening 10 minutes of action at Ted Grant Field, and shots on goal were saved by either side until the 18:16 mark when the home team got on the board. The Dolphins extended their lead before the Panthers had a chance on offense, but a free position shot for Johnson proved successful, cutting into the deficit with nearly half of the opening frame left to play. Nicole Delany of Le Moyne added another, however Beier kept the game within reach with a goal just before the teams broke for their respective locker rooms.
Jahelka's free position goal at 22:51 in the second locked the game at 3-3 as the Panthers took their first lead of the contest less than a minute later on Beier's 28th goal of the season- forcing the home team to call a timeout. Le Moyne was awarded four free position attempts over the next eight minutes and knotted the game at four-all on their third shot, a goal from Monica Sanna. The hosts took back the lead and held on for the remainder of the contest despite late shot attempts from
Beth Ann Pierce and Johnson.
Adelphi returns to action at home on Saturday, April 22 when they host Assumption College on Motamed Field at 12:00 p.m.
